Why self-care for moms is not just a luxury but a necessity for overall well-being

Let’s get real – whether you’re navigating the challenges of pregnancy, conquering the postpartum stage, or knee-deep in the adventures of raising little ones, self-care isn’t a luxury. It’s a must-have for our sanity.

In the whirlwind of mom life, where everyone else’s needs come first, we often put our well-being on the back burner.

But here’s the deal: self-care is the secret sauce that keeps us going. It’s about staying physically fit, keeping our heads straight, and finding joy in the chaos of parenting.

Trust me, making self-care a non-negotiable is like giving ourselves a permission slip to be awesome moms without burning out. So, let’s ditch the guilt and embrace self-care like the absolute necessity it is!

How to make time for self-care if you have little to no support system

Ditch the mom guilt

So, how do we kick mom guilt to the curb? Start by reframing your mindset—understand that a happier, more rejuvenated you translates to a better mom for your crew. To take good care of your family, you need to take care of yourself first. It’s not about doing it all; it’s about doing what’s sustainable for you.

Learn to say no

Learning to say no as a mom is like giving yourself a superpower cape. We’ve all been there, drowning in commitments and endless to-dos, thinking we can do it all.

But here’s the thing – we can’t, and that’s perfectly okay. Saying no isn’t a sign of weakness, rather, it’s a declaration of self-respect. Prioritizing self-care means recognizing your limits and guarding your time like the precious resource it is.

So, how do you do it? Start by evaluating what truly aligns with your priorities. If it doesn’t contribute to your well-being or the well-being of your family, it’s a prime candidate for a graceful no.

It’s ok to say no to your nephew’s birthday party or a playdate invitation. Saying no is a redirection of your energy towards what matters most.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-2398406608631692"
     data-ad-slot="5096468188"
     data-ad-format="auto"
     data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

Hire someone

Navigating motherhood without a support system nearby can be like juggling flaming torches while riding a unicycle. In my case, with parents on the other side of the globe and in-laws residing out of town, we practically started our family in a new city. I had to hire a live-in nanny to help me out when I was recovering from postpartum. I used to feel a tad guilty about it, but then I realized that outsourcing some tasks is needed for my sanity.

Whether it’s finding a local babysitter for a few hours or delegating household chores, seeking external support can make a world of difference.

Embrace brief intervals for self-care

In the chaotic symphony of mom life, embracing brief intervals for self-care is my secret weapon.

I’ve learned to sprinkle bite-sized moments of self-care throughout my day. Whether it’s savoring a quiet cup of coffee before the household wakes up, stealing a few minutes of yoga, or even relishing a short solo walk around the block, these snippets of me-time are like mini oxygen tanks for my sanity.

Trust me, those brief intervals add up, creating a mosaic of well-being that keeps me grounded and ready to tackle whatever mom life throws my way.

Put your kids to bed early

Putting the little ones to bed at a reasonable hour isn’t just about clocking in extra Netflix time (although that’s a nice bonus). Early bedtime means I get a precious window of “me time” in the evening – a chance to recharge, unwind, and indulge in some guilt-free self-care activities. From doing a home manicure to blogging, those quiet post-bedtime hours are my lifeline.

The trick? Establishing a consistent bedtime routine. I was able to sleep train my kids at 6 months old and they’ve been going to sleep at 8:30 pm consistently. Trust me, the early bedtime routine is a win-win for kids and mommy.

Utilize your kid’s nap times

Ah, the sacred nap times – those precious moments of tranquility in chaos! When my kiddos are catching some Z’s, I’ve made it a personal mission to recharge my batteries. Whether it’s savoring a cup of coffee without interruptions or watching an episode of my favorite show, these stolen moments become my self-care oasis.

Don’t have a consistent napping schedule? Check out my tips for sleep training for naps.

Schedule your self-care time

Treat your self-care like any other important appointment – put it on the calendar and make it non-negotiable. Start small even if you can only carve out 15 minutes.

Some of the self-care activities I have on my schedule are my weekly skincare spa day, dance lesson, and a reminder to start my night routine. These moments ensure they become non-negotiable parts of my self-care.

Allow your kids some screen time

It’s ok to allow your kids some screen. Picture this: a cup of tea in hand, a quiet corner for you to catch your breath, and your kiddos engrossed in their favorite show. It’s a win-win.

Just set clear boundaries and guilt-free time limits. Choose age-appropriate content, maybe even sneak in some educational shows.

Batch Activities

Batching activities as a mom is a strategic approach to streamline your routine and make the most of your time. Here are some ways to effectively batch activities:

Meal prep – Dedicate a specific day to plan and prepare meals for the week. Chop veggies, cook proteins, and store them for easy and quick assembly during busy days.

Self-care power hour: Create a power hour for self-care by grouping activities together. Whether it’s a quick workout, a relaxing bath, or a moment to journal, bundling these activities in a dedicated time slot ensures you prioritize self-care consistently.

Errand efficiency: Combine errands to minimize time spent outside. If you have multiple tasks that require leaving the house, plan a route that allows you to complete them in a single outing.

Organized outfit planning: Batch the process of selecting outfits by planning them for the week. Take some time over the weekend to coordinate outfits, ensuring a smoother morning routine without the stress of deciding what to wear.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-2398406608631692"
     data-ad-slot="1146673591"
     data-ad-format="auto"
     data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

Ask your partner or friend for help

I used to believe that doing it all on my own was a badge of honor, but truth be told, it’s a fast track to burnout. Asking my husband to make dinner or dropping off my kids at my neighbor’s for a few hours is a game-changer. Communicate openly and let them know what you need. Asking for help is building a support system that fuels your self-care journey.

Make chores a family affair

Rally the troops, whether it’s your partner or the kiddos, and divvy up the tasks. Share the load, delegate responsibilities, and turn mundane chores into bonding moments. Teach your kids to do and fold their laundry. Turn dinner prep into a family event. Making chores a collective effort not only gets the job done but also frees up those invaluable pockets of time where you can sneak in a bit of self-care.

Simplify your meal preparation

Since I have little support system, finding ways to streamline the kitchen routine is a game-changer. Opting for easy, wholesome recipes and meal prepping in advance not only saves time but also ensures that my family gets nourishing meals without the stress.

Embracing shortcuts like one-pot wonders or utilizing the trusty slow cooker allows me to juggle mom duties without feeling overwhelmed in the kitchen.

Eat out or take out

Let’s face it, there are days when the kitchen feels like an uncharted territory, and the idea of someone else handling the pots and pans is pure bliss. Prioritizing self-care means giving ourselves permission to take a break from the stove and indulge in the convenience of a delicious meal prepared by someone else.

I don’t cook on Friday nights and we eat out most of the time on the weekends. It’s about embracing the joy of a hassle-free meal that leaves me room for a much-needed breather.

Embrace a touch of disorder in your house

When you’re juggling mom duties with little support system, chasing perfection can be exhausting. It’s okay not to have everything perfectly in place.

So, that unfolded laundry? It can wait. Those toys strewn across the living room? They’re evidence of laughter and play. Grant yourself the grace to let go of the pressure to maintain an Instagram-worthy home 24/7. A touch of disorder can give you the space and time to focus on what truly matters—your well-being and the joy of motherhood.

Common questions about self-care for moms

How often should moms have alone time?

How often moms get some alone time depends on what each of us needs and likes. It’s super important for us to get that self-care vibe and find a balance that fits our groove. Ideally, squeezing in regular alone moments is the goal – whether it’s a quick breather every day or carving out a few hours or a day to ourselves every week or month. The trick is to make it a routine, kind of like your daily coffee fix, recognizing that alone time isn’t a luxury but a must for keeping our heads in the game.

How not to be too hard on yourself as a mom?

Instead of beating ourselves up over every spilled cup of juice or missed bedtime, let’s embrace the chaos, learn from the mess-ups, and remember that being a good mom is about love, not flawless execution.

Last thing you need to know about self-care for moms

Cut and file your nails

Trim your nails to your preferred shape.

Take a moment to delicately file until the tips are super smooth. Trust me, this smooth canvas is key for the nail polish to stick around like a champ.

I love using glass nail files because they’re more gentle on the nails and will create less keratin residue when filing.

Trim and push back cuticles

Nail polish on your cuticles comes off quicker than polish on your nails. When cuticles are neatly trimmed and pushed back, the polish has a smooth surface to adhere to, preventing premature chipping or peeling.

Simply use a cuticle pusher to push back cuticles. Pay special attention to the sides of your cuticles. If your cuticles are on the thicker side like mine, you can use a cuticle trimmer to trim off excess cuticles.

Buff Your Nails Before Applying Polish

Buffing your nails not only eliminates any natural oils that could mess with your polish game but also seals the deal after filing, creating a pristine base. This clean slate is your secret sauce for a polish that sticks around.

I use the 4-way buffing block to buff my natural nails before applying polish. I love that I can also use it to smooth and shine nails when I don’t feel like wearing nail polish.

Remove excess oil from your nails

After buffing, give them a good wash to eliminate any lingering dust or oils.

Here’s the magic touch: wipe your nails with alcohol to ensure every bit of excess oil is gone. This not only preps the canvas for a flawless polish application but also ensures that your manicure is in it for the long haul.

Properly apply nail polish so that it stays on longer

Apply thin color coats

Thin coats dry faster, creating the perfect balance between wet and dry. This magical ratio ensures that each coat gets just the right amount of moisture, forming a strong bond as it dries.

On the flip side, opting for thick coats hinders this drying and bonding process, leaving each coat consistently wet.

Beyond the technicalities, thin polish layers reduce the risk of catching on surfaces or accidental nail impacts that could lift the polish.

I’m a fan of Eternal’s nail polish. They’re one of the highest rated nail polish on Amazon and they are super affordable. These vibrant colors only need one coat and are seriously one of the quickest-drying nail polishes available.

Wrap the tips

Wrapping the fingertips It’s not just a little step; it’s a massive difference-maker.

When you swipe a thin coat of polish along the free edge of your nails, you’re creating a barrier that delays the intrusion of water and oils under the polish. This delay is the key to preventing those pesky chips from showing up too soon.

And guess what?

Even if your nails are on the shorter side, don’t skip this step. When you’re applying polish, make sure to wrap it around the tips, following the natural curve of the nail and finishing just beneath.

Apply only your nails

It’s common for a little nail polish spillage onto the cuticles or skin. Now, while it might seem harmless, it’s a sneaky troublemaker. If the polish gets under your skin or onto your cuticle, it’s like breaking the seal that keeps it snug on your nail. When it peels off your skin or cuticle, it takes your perfect polish with it.

I always use these nail tip clips when I paint my nails. These little clips make it a breeze to paint only the nails and not onto my skin.

Apply top coat

Whether you’re vibing with matte vibes or all about that shine, settling for anything less than a stellar top coat is a no-go. The right top coat is a must in extending the life of any manicure.

Look out for formulas that shout out chip resistance, offer protection, and throw in some nail-strengthening magic.

Let your nail polish dry and fully set

It should take your nail polish around 7 to 10 minutes to dry. This wait is crucial to avoid any unfortunate dents that can happen if you rush it.

Need a little speed boost? Cool air is your new best friend! Whether it’s a fan or a hairdryer, just ensure it’s set on cool – it works its magic faster than warm air.

After manicure care

Nourish cuticles with oil

Hydrated, happy cuticles create a protective barrier, preventing the polish from chipping and peeling. It’s like giving your nails a shield against the daily grind. The added moisture not only promotes healthier nails but also helps the polish adhere better, ensuring it stays put for an extended glam time.

Every night, I rub oil around my cuticles and follow up with hand cream. I’ve been using the award-winning L’Occitane Nourishing Nail & Cuticle Oil for years. You can also use vitamin E, avocado oil, or coconut oil if you have them around.

Avoid soaking nails in water

Steer clear of extended water exposure, especially hot baths and jacuzzis, as it can be a polish’s worst enemy. Water causes the nail to expand, and when it contracts as it dries, it can lead to chipping and peeling of your nail polish.

Use gloves

When tackling chores like dishes or cleaning makeup brushes, slip on those gloves. Water and cleaning chemicals can be the silent enemies of your manicure, causing chips and premature fading.

By protecting your nails with gloves, you’re creating a shield against the elements, ensuring your nail polish stays vibrant and chip-free for much longer. It’s a small effort for big results in maintaining that polished perfection.

Apply top coat every 3-5 days

Our busy days can be tough on our nails, causing chips here and there. Reapplying the top coat is like giving your manicure a refresh button.

Don’t forget to seal the deal by gliding the top coat along the edges of your nails. Especially if you’re a hand-washing pro or use your hands a lot, apply the top coat more often. One of the top coats I’ve used is the Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Nail Coat.

Don’t use your nails as tools

Resist the temptation to turn your nails into multitool wonders! Avoid using nails to open cans and if you have longer nails, try using a stylus for your phone/tablet instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is a base coat needed for a longer-lasting nail polish?

The pros will always tell you that a base coat is needed for long-lasting nail polish. But in my experience, it didn’t make a difference. I think that if you properly prep your nails and use a good color nail polish and top coat, you can skip the base coat.

What fingernail polish stays on the longest?

JINsoon, OPI, and Dior Vernis Gel Shine & Long Wear Nail Lacquer are the reigning champs, dominating the charts on authority sites like Martha Stewart, BuzzFeed, and The Cut.

Also, opt for glitter polishes as they tend to last longer with their thicker consistency.
