Bedtime Books

Reading books is a great activity for passing time on flights because it’s easy to carry, educational, and does not make loud noises that can be disturbing to other seatmates.

If reading books is part of your toddler’s bedtime routine, read some books to ensure your child has gotten all the snooze buttons pressed.

You can’t be too careful when flying on an airplane- make sure your toddler’s naps are planned accordingly. If you have a full day of adventure ahead, it’s best to let your child sleep before landing. Conversely, if visiting at night and heading straight for bed, then make sure they are awake at least 2 hours before landing.

When traveling with my toddlers, I also bring along books from our bedtime collection. Since they’re so used to reading these books right before they go down for the night, reading these books on the plane will signal them that it’s time for bed.

The Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boyton is a short and silly board book. This little book even fits in my purse! Madi’s favorite is the Good Morning, Good Night! book by Tresa Imperato because she gets to feel the soft, fluffy fur of each animal in the story.

Mess-Free Coloring Activities

Plus, with no mess or loose pieces involved, you won’t have to worry about spills or clutter in the cabin.

This ingenious invention is simply an assortment of small items with different textures. No fillers (think rice and beans in a traditional sensory box) are needed so no mess to clean!

Here are some textures and toys ideas:

• Soft – cotton ball, feather.
• Hard – golf ball, rocks, seashell, pine cone, wooden cube
• Rough – air-dried washcloth, scrub sponge, sandpaper, rough fabric like corduroy

Top things to do at Irvine Park Railroad

TRAIN RIDES 

Price: $6.00 per person
Hours: Open daily at 10:00 am

Your trip to Irvine Park Railroad won’t be complete without riding its famous train ride. This 1/3 scale train takes both children and adults on a ride through the beautiful and historic Irvine Regional Park.

The train ride is just off the entrance from the parking lot so I suggest taking the ride first thing. We left the stroller in our car and hop on the first ride in the morning. Throughout the 10 minutes or so ride, a train conductor explained the different attractions there are at the park.

We saw peacocks strolling down the path, the oldest tree in Orange County, and historic buildings along the way. I was mentally mapping out all the picture-worthy spots to visit after the ride!

PONY RIDES 

Cost: $6.00 per person
Hours: Open Tuesday – Sunday at 11:00 am; CLOSED Mondays

The pony rides are located just next to the train ride. So, we went straight to the ponies after we hop off the train.

Irvine Regional Park features both walking and trotting ponies for kids to ride. The walking ponies are open Tuesday through Sunday and the trotting ponies are open on weekends and holidays. 

Baby W gets to ride his own pony and be trotted by other horse riders. I was a little bit scared for him because it was his first time riding on his own. It was nonetheless his favorite part in the park.

A walking pony is available for younger children and the parent gets to walk the pony.

PADDLE BOAT RENTALS 

Price: $20.00 per 1/2 hour
Hours: Weekdays at 10:00 am; Weekends & Holidays at 9:00 am

Irvine Regional Park is one of the few places in SoCal that have paddle boat rentals. It’s a perfect activity for sightseeing, people watching, exercising, or simply enjoying the lake inside of Irvine Regional Park.

We missed this fun activity because each paddle board can only accommodate up to 3 riders. I’ll for sure come back when Baby Madi is old enough to ride!

BIKE RENTALS 

Price: Varies
Hours: Weekdays at 10:00 am; Weekends & Holidays 9:00 am

Riding within the Irvine Park Railroad is a great way to sightsee and enjoy all the beautiful sceneries the park has to offer. No matter how big or small your party is, there is a bike to accommodate your group.

We placed Baby Madi in the front of the surrey and the 4 of us had a blast cruising around the park.

We didn’t need to follow the map at all. Instead, we just rode on whatever roads took us.

There are plenty of signs along the way to guide you so don’t worry, you won’t get lost!

OC ZOO

Price: $2.00 per person
Hours: Open Daily at 10:00 am

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much about this zoo since the admission was only $2.00 per person, and kids under 3 go in for FREE. I was only looking forward to seeing a few animals we typically see at any zoo.

Boy, I was wrong!

We saw black bears, mountain lions, a bald eagle, great-horned owls, porcupine, coyotes, turkey vultures, and more.

The zoo is very clean and well-kept. There were many live demonstrations where we get to see certain animals in close contact.

There are lots of reptiles at the zoo including snakes and lizards. It was W’s favorite exhibit in the zoo!.

We even saw a bald eagle and a giant tortoise!

The zoo also features a barnyard (petting zoo) with domestic goats, sheep, pot-bellied pigs, doves, chickens, and pheasants. Many of the barnyard animals are available for touching contact through the fence. 

HIKING TRAILS

Open daily at 6:00 am

There are many hiking trails in Irvine Reginal Park ranging from easy to hard. Be sure to check out the map on the various trails offered.

There are so many antique buildings and decorations throughout the park making them the perfect backdrop for photos!

When is the best time to visit Irvine Park Railroad?

You know how hot Southern California gets during the summer. Although there are plenty of trees within the park, it can get up to 100°F in the summer here. If you must visit on a hot summer day, I’d suggest arriving in the morning or late evening.

We visited in July. Knowing that it’ll get 90°F in the day, we arrived at 10 am when the park first opened. We did all the activities first and visited the zoo after lunch. It got pretty hot and uncomfortable by the time we left.

The park also offers many events throughout the year. The Irvine Park Raileoad pumpkin patch is particularly popular here making them one of the best places to experience fall in SoCal. There is the Easter Eggstravaganza event during spring and in December, it’s worthwhile visiting Santa’s Village and Santa’s train.

How long do you need at the Irvine Park Railroad?

With a 5-year-old and an 18-month-old, I found that 3-4 hours at the park is sufficient. Of course, it depends on if you want to do all the attractions and how long the wait is for food and attractions.

We went early in the morning and did all the attractions except the paddle boarding and it took us about 4 hours total.

Is Irvine Park Railroad stroller friendly?

Absolutely! The park is huge so be sure to bring your child’s stroller or wagon for them to sit in.

There are paved and dirt roads so it’s stroller-friendly. All the attractions have designated spots for stroller parking. We never had any issues when we left our stroller while we went on the bike and train rides.

Is there food at Irvine Park Railroad?

There are 2 snack bars located within Irvine Park Railroad. Both snack bars serve essentially the same items. Its full menu includes hot and cold foods such as burgers, grilled cheese, trail mix, chips, ice creams, and sodas.

Not exactly the healthiest foods but they are convenient. I recommend packing some fruits and veggies from home and getting the hot foods from the snack bars.

Picnic tables are available on a first-come, first-serve basis so I suggest eating a bit earlier or later to get a good spot. We ordered food from the Lakeside Snack Bar at 12:30 pm and had to wait for others to leave in order to sit at one of the picnic tables. You can also bring your own picnic blanket to eat on the grass areas.

This post is all about the best pumpkin patches in Southern California

Orange County Attractions

Tanaka Farms

Address: 5380 3/4 University Dr. Irvine, CA 92612

  Admission: $10; kids under 2 free

This 30-acre family-operated farm got lots to offer. Visitors can pick their own vegetables (U-pick), feed and pet the animals at the barnyard, and buy fresh produce from the market stand. There are also beautiful flower fields to wander through and wagon rides to take you around the farm!

This season’s pumpkin patch runs from September 17 through October 31. It is the only pumpkin patch in Orange County where you get to pick your own pumpkin!

From Monday through Thursday, the 15-minutes Wagon Ride takes you around the farm and kids can pet all sorts of barn animals in the Barnyard Educational Exhibit.

Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in October, in addition to the Wagon Ride, Barnyard Educational Exhibit, they have ATV rides, the Pumpkin Cannon, food from the TANAKA GRILL, and interactive activities for kids.

Pumpkin City’s Pumpkin Patch

Pumpkin City is one of the oldest pumpkin patches in California. They have been dedicated to celebrating the October Halloween season with wholesome family fun and entertainment. If you’re looking to take your kids somewhere for cute seasonal pictures, definitely check Pumpkin City out.

This year, the festival runs from September 30 – October 31.

Each year, visitors are delighted to interact with dozens of cute barnyard animals in the Petting Zoo, ride a pony at the Pony Corral, sit back and watch a puppet show and take pictures with costumed characters. In addition, enjoy a host of Amusement Rides, Activities, and Game Booths all while strolling through thousands of pumpkins of all shapes and sizes.

SoCal Insider’s Tip: There is no fee to enter and parking is free, but you’ll have to buy tickets for every attraction.

Sherman Library and Gardens

This beautiful and tranquil cultural center is nestled in the quaint Newport Beach neighborhood. The premier botanical garden showcases plants from around the world. The gardens are well taken care of and there are tons to see, making it the perfect place for photos.

In October, the grounds are filled with gourds and pumpkin decors for the fall season. Kids-friendly classes such as junior gardener, dance, and painting are available for sign up. Check out their calendar of events for more information.

Cultivar Restaurant within the garden is worth the trip itself!

Los Angeles County Attractions

Descanso Gardens

Descanso Gardens is a gorgeous place to visit any time during the year; however, during the fall it becomes a fall foliage wonderland. Plan a day to explore at a leisurely pace and take in all the Gardens have to offer. During the autumn months, you’ll find roses, camellias, ginkgo, toyon berries, and more in bloom.

Carved is the official fall festival in this beautiful garden open from October 7 – October 31 this year. Hundreds of carved pumpkins will line a 1-mile walk through the Camellia Forest and Oak Grove. Along with pumpkins, there will be exciting new oversized sculptures made of sticks and other natural materials. The popular Pumpkin House, a hay maze, and themed food and beverage will all help to create a fun harvest festival ambiance.

SoCal Insider’s tip: Snacks and beverage options are available for purchase at the event. Outside food is not allowed in the Gardens. Evenings in La Cañada Flintridge can be chilly so please dress warmly.

Underwood Farms

Located in Corona, the Pumpkin Factory provides families with fun-filled memories! Go experience the wonder of pumpkin patches, rides, slides, ponies, petting zoo, games, food, and more! You can also grab a pumpkin on the way out.

Admission is free on weekdays and $5 on weekends. You’ll need to purchase tickets to ride anything or play games. Each attraction was about 5-6 tickets per person.

SoCal Insider’s Tip: Save on activity tickets when you buy bulk. A packet of 52 or 140 tickets is available for a discount. Ideal if you are going with a large group.

The pumpkin fest at Cal Poly Pomona is at its 28th year! All 5 Weekends in October will be filled with family fun activities. You can pick the perfect pumpkin at the pumpkin patch, kids can pet barn animals, and the entire family gets to ride a hay wagon, get lost in the giant corn maze, and so much more!

Along with the popular festival food and live entertainment, the pumpkin fest has fun farm demonstrations like cow milking and beekeeping. Don’t forget to check out the Marketplace for some fresh produce, specialty pumpkins, fall decor, and artisan goods.

New to this year are the Moo Moo Cow Train and Children’s Garden activities including Creepy Bugs and Squirmy Snakes.

Calabasas Pumpkin Festival

SoCal residents, do not miss this one-day event! For only $15, you get unlimited rides and games at this street fair. The festival has everything pumpkin. From pumpkin patch, pumpkin carvings, pumpkin pies, pumpkin pavilion, and more. If you’re a pumpkin lover or just want a family day out, be sure to check out the Calabasas pumpkin festival!

SoCal Insider’s Tip: Save $5 per ticket to purchase online in advance before Oct. 15th. Friendly dogs on leashes are permitted on the grounds. Parking is free and there are shuttles to take you to the main gate.

Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch

If you’re looking for the perfect fall backdrop, this is it!

This family-owned and operated business have been bringing SoCal residents the magic of Halloween since 1987. They are known for their pumpkin houses. Lots of beautifully decorated structures with pumpkins in different sizes, colors, and textures. Perfect for that Instagram pic!

Besides from a lot of Halloween and autumn props, there are face painting, slides, giant rocking horses, straw mazes, a petting zoo, bounces, and more.

SoCal Insider’s Tip: Not recommended to bring strollers as this place is covered in wood chips as ground cover to eliminate dust, and the ground is uneven. Paid on-site parking is available and there is ample street parking if you go early.

]]> Growing up in Orange County, one of my favorite places to hang out is downtown waterfront at Long Beach, CA.

I had so much fun hitting up the parks there with my friends back in the days, and I appreciate it, even more, visiting with my own little family.

With so many things to offer, you can easily spend a whole day there. The miles-long esplanade will take you through an array of beautiful waterfront attractions that you can’t stop but take pictures of.

There are lots of shopping, dining, and entertainment options for the family. Both kids and adults will never be bored.

Must visit places

Rainbow Harbor Esplanade

The Rainbow Harbor Esplanade is a mile-long boardwalk that connects all the landmarks within Long Beach waterfront.

The scenic route is super walkable. You’ll get to visit the lighthouse-centered Shoreline Aquatic Park, Rainbow Harbor, Shoreline Village, Aquarium of the Pacific, and tons of interesting finds along the way.

Street vendors are scattered throughout the boardwalk.

Feeling hungry? Grab a churro and soft-serve ice cream.

Feeling romantic? Buy a lock from one of the stands and lock in on the fence with your loved ones.

Feeling chilly (or hot)? Shop cozy blankets or hats from one of the apparel street vendors.

Feeling photogenic?

Get a picture with parrots!

There’s this cool photo place where you get to pose with beautiful and well-mannered parrots.

Rainbow Marina

The marina is filled with recreational and commercial boaters.

It’s also a homeport to an array of exciting waterfront attractions, including sports fishing; whale watching tours; private dinner cruises; private charter boats; rental boats; personal watercraft rentals; and more.

Shoreline Aquatic Park

This Park is essentially a huge lawn for pictures and water views.

Pack some snacks and enjoy a laid-back picnic here. During summertime, you’ll see lots of sunbathers soaking up the sun here.

We didn’t visit this park during our trip this time but you can see the park from the shoreline.

The park is very easy to find. Just look for the lighthouse!

Shoreline Village

Shoreline Village is a popular destination to visit. It’s a little village filled with shopping, bars, and family fun things to do.

Refreshments from the village range from casual to sophisticated. An ice cream cone or funnel cake will do the trick for a quick bite. Fine dining is an option for special occasions with spectacular views of the harbor and Queen Mary.

You’ll also find lots of specialty shops within the village, ranging from souvenirs, paintings, apparel, and more.

If you’re up for a ride, you can rent all sorts of bikes here. Including this fancy bike!

When you stroll further down from Shoreline Village, you’ll see the iconic Queen Mary docked along the shore.

By the way, if you’re looking for a great place to see 4th of July fireworks, Queen Mary has by far the best views.

Pelican Pier Pavilion

This is the arcade that’ll keep your kids entertained. There is a giant sea-themed carousel and numerous arcade games.

No coins are accepted so you’ll need to buy a pass and you can load money in it. Kids (and adults) can play games and win prizes. There are games for everyone, even for my 3-year-old boy!

Where to park

Parking can be hectic when visiting this popular tourist spot. If you want to be close to all of the attractions listed above and restaurants, the best place to park is in the parking structure across the street from the Aquarium of the Pacific – between Chestnut Place and Aquarium Way.

You can just google Aquarium of the Pacific for the address. You’ll see a 5-story parking structure nearby.

This parking garage can accommodate aquarium visitors and shoppers. Even during weekends, we have no problem finding a spot to park.

Other nearby parking garages are available on the City of Long Beach website.

Tips for visiting with family

Check events before visiting to avoid closed roads and crowds

The city of Long Beach hosts a variety of events from summer music festivals to the Grand Prix car race. Roads can be closed to accommodate these special events. To avoid getting lost in the crowds, check out the events page before you visit.

Get on restaurant reservation when visiting on the weekends

During peak dinner hours, restaurants can have a very long waitlist. I remember when we were looking for places to eat around 5:30 pm on a Saturday, restaurants have an average of 1 hour wait time. Our babies were hungry and crying so we left to get dinner elsewhere.

We’ve learned from our experience to always call ahead to make reservations before we go.

Wear comfortably

There will be a lot of walking so be prepared to wear comfortable shoes. We spent around 4 hours there and a big chunk of that time was spent on walking and sightseeing. Benches are scattered throughout so you can always stop to catch some rest or breastfeeding

Long Beach waterfront is a very kid and baby-friendly place to visit. Spending a relaxing day with family here has never been so easy and blissful.
