This post is all about postpartum outfit for hospital.

Preparing for your hospital stay

While you may have your hospital bags packed for the big arrival, don’t forget to pack yourself a postpartum outfit! In between all the excitement and packing of baby mittens and thank you cards, make sure to take a few minutes and find something comfy yet cute to bring with you.

Pack a few outfits that are comfortable yet still give you a little confidence boost so when visitors come around, your postpartum look will be ready. Trust me, it’ll do wonders for your post-delivery mood!

RELATED POST: Hospital Bag Essentials Checklist – for mom, dad, and baby

How to choose the best postpartum outfit for hospital

Your priority should be comfort and ease of movement without compromising style. Choose items that are loose-fitting and breathable for your postpartum outfit.

Consider buying nursing tops for the convenience of breastfeeding, and pants with an elasticized waistband in case you recently had a c-section.

The hospital is notorious for being cold. Not to mention, our bodies are already weakened from the labor and delivery process. It’s important to pack long sleeves and cozy socks to keep yourself warm and prevent any unwanted colds.

The ultimate list of postpartum outfit for hospital

Not only will it keep you feeling snuggly and secure during those first few days of adjustment, but it also makes kangaroo care and breastfeeding a breeze.

Do you wear a hospital gown after delivery?

I was in my hospital gown for the first day but I always wear my full-length robe on top of it since the hospital is so cold. On day two and the big going home day, I swapped out the robe for my favorite dresses. After all, a little outfit change can do wonders for the spirits.

Do you wear a bra under a hospital gown?

I didn’t wear a bra under my hospital gown because I was doing kangaroo care every moment my baby was awake. Whether wearing a bra under a hospital gown or not is merely a personal preference. But if you do, wear a nursing bra so that you can easily breastfeed.

Can you wear jeans after giving birth?

Keep in mind that your body just accomplished something pretty incredible, so give it the time it needs to heal and adjust. Sure, you can throw on those favorite jeans of yours, but be warned – it may feel a little like trying to squeeze back into your middle school clothes. And let’s be real, no one wants that uncomfortable feeling, especially if you have some battle scars from a vaginal tear or a C-section. Your body needs time to heal and adjust, so give it the VIP treatment it deserves. Opt for some loose-fitting clothes like a dress or lounge pants that won’t rub against your delicate areas.

Boosting Your Milk Supply

This specially crafted herbal blend, made by Traditional Medicinals, is designed to give your lactation a boost. Mother’s Milk tea is packed with galactagogues like fenugreek and blessed thistle, which can naturally increase milk production and help you provide more nourishment for your little one.

I drank Mother’s Milk tea every day while I was lactating. Along with other hacks to boost milk supply like power pumping and taking lecithin, I managed to fill a mini fridge with breast milk!

Enhanced Milk Flow

Let’s face it, milk let-down can sometimes feel like a waiting game. But with Mother’s Milk Tea on your side, that wait might become a lot shorter.

Anise and coriander, two of the tea’s ingredients, are believed to help improve milk flow, making nursing sessions smoother and more efficient.

After my babies were admitted to the NICU right after birth, I wasn’t able to do any kangaroo care, which is known to promote milk let-down. However, I began drinking Mother’s Milk tea hours after giving birth and visiting my babies in the NICU.
Improved Milk Quality

Some moms have reported that their milk tastes sweeter and more pleasant to their little ones after enjoying this tea regularly.

I’ve never tasted my breastmilk, so I can’t personally confirm the claim that the tea makes it sweeter. However, I can say that Mother’s Milk tea has a sweet flavor, so it’s possible that it could make breast milk slightly sweeter if used regularly.

Digestive Comfort

Are tummy troubles giving both you and your baby a hard time? The tea’s spearmint and marshmallow root come to the rescue. They can soothe digestive discomfort, ensuring that both you and your little one have a more comfortable breastfeeding experience.

Mother’s Milk Tea benefits for hair

A Mother’s Milk tea bag contains 35mg of fenugreek. Early studies hint that this herb could help with hair loss by boosting blood circulation and preventing DHT, a hair loss linked chemical, from attaching to hair follicles.

During my nursing journey, I did experience bouts of postpartum hair loss, but I quickly recovered. I don’t think it’s entirely due to drinking Mother’s Milk tea regularly. Instead, I focus on hair loss remedies and do my best to grow hair fast.

Are there benefits to drinking Mother’s Milk tea during pregnancy?

While fenugreek is a known lactation booster, it’s a no-go during pregnancy as it can cause uterine contractions. Also, the label mentions that it is intended for use when nursing.

If you’re in the mood for a pregnancy-safe tea, an excellent option would be Traditional Medicinals Pregnancy tea.

Mother’s Milke Tea Side Effects

For the majority of moms, Mother’s Milk Tea is safe and well-tolerated.

I drink 2 tea bags twice a day. I try to space them out during the day so a tea bag in the morning, then another one in the late afternoon.

However, some women may experience:

Allergic Reactions: If you’re allergic to any of the ingredients, it’s best to avoid the tea.

Gastrointestinal Upset: In rare cases, some women may experience mild stomach discomfort or diarrhea.

Low Blood Sugar: Fenugreek, one of the key ingredients, can lower blood sugar levels, so it’s essential to monitor if you have diabetes.

What does Mother’s Milk Tea taste like

Mother’s Milk tea has a subtly sweet and earthy flavor. It’s not overly strong or bitter, which is great because no new mom needs that extra bitterness in her life!

The sweetness comes from ingredients like fennel and anise, making it quite enjoyable to sip on. The overall taste is soothing, like a warm hug for your taste buds. It’s not your typical tea, but it’s uniquely delightful.

What I like about Mother’s Milk tea

First and foremost, it’s a game-changer when it comes to boosting and maintaining my breast milk supply. As a mom who has tried just about everything, this tea has been a lifesaver.

Another thing I appreciate is the convenience. Brewing a cup of this tea is super easy, especially during those sleep-deprived nights. It comes in tea bags, so all you have to do is steep one in hot water for a few minutes, and you’re good to go.

No need for complicated preparations or measuring out herbs. Plus, the soothing ritual of sipping a warm cup of tea can be a moment of calm in the chaos of motherhood.

What I dislike about Mother’s Milk tea

Nothing. Really.

My dad is an herbalist so I grew up drinking herbs and am used to anything bitter. The taste of Mother’s Milk tea, while pleasant to many, might not be everyone’s cup of tea (pun intended).

Some might find the licorice and fenugreek flavors a bit strong or unusual. But honestly, the taste is so subtle, and the benefits far outweigh any minor taste reservations.

The other thing worth mentioning is that it might not work as miraculously for every mom. Our bodies are unique, and what works wonders for one might not have the same effect on another.

So, while I sing praises for this tea, it’s important to keep in mind that individual results may vary.

Best places to buy Mother’s Milk Tea

Traditional Medicinals Mother’s Milk tea is a popular tea so chances are, your local grocery store carries it.

Your due date is around the corner and getting your hospital bag checklist essentials can be overwhelming. Knowing what to pack in your hospital bag is easier said than done.

There are essentials you must have and the things you want to leave behind. Some “essential” items like the breast pump, pacifier, maxi pad… to name a few… will be provided by the hospital already so these items will just take up space in your hospital bag.

Here is a list of hospital bag checklist items for mom, dad, and baby from a second-time mom (myself!) and a doula friend.

When Should I Pack My Hospital Bag?

If you are type A like me, you probably have your bag packed by 30 weeks pregnant. Although it doesn’t hurt to get your hospital bag ready early, there is no benefit in doing so either.

You should have your hospital bag ready to go between 32 and 35 weeks of pregnancy.

This is because if you go into labor before 32 weeks pregnant, you probably won’t go through the labor process like you would have had with a full-term baby. Also, any preemie that’s born earlier than 34 weeks gestation would spend several weeks in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit.

Have a Labor Bag and a Postpartum Bag

When I was pregnant with my first child, I did lots of research on what to pack for my hospital bag. I thought I had the perfect hospital bag checklist.

Then, I met a celebrity doula that gave me a different perspective on what to pack for my hospital bag. The hospital bag should contain a labor component and a postpartum component.

Separate the things you need before and after the baby arrives will make you and your partner’s lives earlier.

The labor bag is essentially everything you need during labor. You can be in labor for hours and shuffling through a bag of unorganized items is the last thing you want.

Within the labor bag, you can separate items with 1-gallon food storage bags. Label bags by Labor – Mom, Labor – Dad, and Labor – snacks.

Do the same thing for Postpartum – Mom, Postpartum – Dad, and Postpartum – Baby.

In addition, to make it easier for your partner to carry, put everything in a wheeled luggage.

Hospital Labor Bag Checklist

Essentials for Mom

1. Insurance card/ ID/ registration documents

Even if you have already registered with the hospital, always bring your insurance card and ID card with you.

2. Lip balm

Hospitals are known to have dry air. Keep your lips soft with lip balm (hubby can help you apply) so you’ll look amazing in your first mother and baby picture! I love my eos Natural & Organic Lip Balm because it’s super smooth to apply and smells amazing. This line of the award-winning brand is made from 100% sustainably sourced ingredients and is USDA organic. Best of all, it’s under $3!

3. Mom’s favorite music

Create a labor playlist with your favorite tunes. As labor can be a long process, I recommend no shorter than 20 songs.

4. Hair tie

You want to get your hair out of the way when you get sweaty from labor.

I don’t use any other types of hair tie other than these traceless, ouchless hair rings. Even after a full day of a high top ponytail, these hair ties leave no marks! It’s also easy to take out of wet hair without tangling. And unlike other hair ties, they don’t pull my hair when I take them out. Perfect for postpartum hair loss too!

For me, I pour it on the maxi pad provided by the hospital.
If you are planning to breastfeed, you’ll want to start breastfeeding or pumping shortly after your baby arrives. If your breastmilk doesn’t come in right away, start pumping can get the milk production going.

Since your nipples are not used to the sucking from the baby or the breast pumps, applying some nipple cream will prevent cracked and sore nipples.

8. Socks or comfy slippers

Essentials for dad

1. Snap cowboy shirt (for skin to skin with baby)

This is not an item to pack per se, but dad can wear a snap shirt when accompanying you to labor. It is equally important for dads to do skin-to-skin with the baby. To make it easier, dad can unsnap his cowboy shirt and put baby on his bare chest without taking his shirt off.

2. Money for incidentals

3. Sweats for sleeping

4. Toiletries

5. Change of clothes

Essentials for baby

1. Sleep sacks

To make baby super comfortable while in dreamland, put him in a sleep sack will help reduce startle reflex. I have a few of these since Baby Chunbao sleeps in them until he’s 6 months old. My favorite is the Halo sleep sack because the 2-way swaddle ensures baby’s best sleep and an easy transition when it’s time to stop swaddling.

Also, the hip-healthy design allows the hips and legs to move freely. The International Hip Dysplasia Institute recommends not swaddling babies tightly around the hips and legs to avoid developing hips issues later in life. Love To Dream sleep sack is another great choice.

2. Water wipes

Baby wipes at the hospital may contain nasty ingredients and unnecessary additives. Give your baby the purest wipes possible from birth with Water Wipes! The wipes are 99.9% purified water with a drop of fruit extract. It has won numerous awards and is accepted by National Eczema Association. I use it on my baby from head to toe ever since he was born! Don’t forget to stock up on some travel size wipes to carry in your diaper bag!

3. Safflower oil (in travel size container)

Safflower oil is a miracle baby oil! I never heard of it until my doula friend told me about it. She recommends it to every mom because it cures baby’s dry skin.

The oil is rich in linoleic acid, moisturizing and soothing for inflamed skin. My infant has pretty bad eczema and we really saw a difference when we put safflower oil on him. Safflower oil is also popular amongst baby massage oils. Whichever oil you choose to use on your baby, make sure it is cold-pressed, unrefined vegetable oils!

4. Aquaphor healing ointment

This is a stable for baby skincare and you probably have a jar of these for yourself! As the newborn’s skin is very delicate, a good moisturizer will nourish and prevent dry chapped skin. The Aquaphor ointment is a bit greasy but you don’t need a lot. A little goes a long way!

5. Butt paste (40% zinc oxide)

Even a little red spot on your newborn’s diaper area can make him uncomfortable. To tame diaper rashes, apply a generous amount of Butt Paste. Unlike other diaper rash cream, Boudreaux’s Maximum Strength Butt Paste treats and helps protect against rash with no harsh ingredients.
20 Postpartum Essentials Every New Mom Should have for a faster recovery

Whether you are planning a vaginal delivery or caesarian section, a postpartum care kit is imperative in surviving the 4th trimester.

I thought birthing is the most painful part of pregnancy, but postpartum recovery is a month-long, endless cycle of pain, discomfort, and sleep deprivation.

Having a postpartum care plan will also help you recover faster as you adapt to your new role in the family.

After surviving two vaginal births with second-degree tears and an episiotomy, my postpartum essentials had helped make my recovery a much smoother ride.

The necessities mentioned here is everything I have used and found beneficial. I hope it will help you as well!

When should I create my postpartum care kit

I wish I knew about postpartum care during my first pregnancy. I was busy nesting and surviving my pregnancy, caring for my post-baby body never crossed my mind.

I had a second-degree tear from my first vaginal delivery (no joke – I was walking around like an old grandma and I dreaded every time going to the bathroom). Although the hospital provided a few postpartum care items, there were so many things I wish I had on hand before the baby arrived.

The second time around, I was reluctantly put on hospital bed rest at 32 weeks pregnant and never had the chance to get my postpartum essentials (nor my hospital bag) ready.

Luckily, I was able to order everything I needed from Amazon when I was on bed rest and everything arrived before my baby’s birthday.

If I have another pregnancy, I will absolutely get my postpartum essentials ready and good to go before the baby arrives.

Trust me. There will be no time to wash your hair let alone stepping out to curate these postpartum essentials or waiting for them to arrive in your mail.

Before you create your postpartum recovery kit

While going through your postpartum essentials checklist, keep in mind that there are a few items you can take or request from your hospital.

Based on my experience birthing at two different hospitals, you will be provided:

Maxi pads. These are not the most comfortable pads because they’rere super thick. But it does its job with postpartum bleeding and the hospital usually provides a ton of these.

Mesh underwears. These are your one-size-fits-all, stretchy underwear. Not comfortable, but I rather wear these during the first couple of days than getting bloodstains on my own underwear.

Peri bottle. Some hospitals will only provide upon request so make sure you ask for one (or two)!

Dermplast. This spray is a life-saver for relieving pain and itchiness.

Hemorrhoid pads. These are a must for hemorrhoids. Be sure to take these with you.

Colace or stool softener. You will only receive the medication for the duration of your hospital stay.

Tynolol or pain killers. Don’t be shy in requesting painkillers. These are absolutely safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

If you are unsure of how to use any of the supplies from the hospital, be sure to ask your nurse how to use them. Also, if you are in any type of discomfort, be sure to let your nurse know. Your hospital may be able to provide additional supplies based on your needs.

Before we move on to the postpartum essentials checklist, please note that these are the products I’ve used based on my two vaginal births. If you are having a c-section, most of the recovering tips and products mentioned will still apply to you.

Postpartum essentials for a speedy recovery

Take your vitamins

Your body just went through the birth of a baby so taking extra care during this delicate time will ensure a speedy recovery. If you still have your prenatal vitamins, be sure to continue to take them. Otherwise, take high-quality postnatal vitamins.

Also, be sure that you get enough calcium during the postpartum phase, especially if you are breastfeeding/pumping. The National Academy of Sciences recommends that women who are breastfeeding consume 1,000 mg of calcium each day. Most prenatal vitamins do not contain sufficient amount of this important mineral so taking extra calcium is needed for you and your baby’s bone health.

I took this all-natural Calcium supplement during both of my pregnancies and I absolutely loved it. This brand is known for its organic whole foods formula and all of its vitamins are formulated without fillers.

Not just Calcium, this supplement contains 73 naturally occurring minerals linked to healthy bones. It is also formulated with probiotics and enzymes for better absorption.

Wear postpartum belly wrap

The extra belly fat will sag after the delivery of your baby so wearing a belly wrap from day one will help to hold your tummy in. The belt will also speed up your recovery by shrinking the uterus, support your lower back, and redefine the waistline.

For both of my pregnancies, I have worn this postpartum belly wrap from the day I delivered up until 6 weeks postpartum. In order to achieve maximum results, you need to wear the band as much as possible during the day and night.

What I love about this 3-in-1 postpartum belly band is that it has 3 different belts for the waist, belly, and pelvis.

The material is very comfortable and breathable. It even comes with pictured instructions on how to wear the belt, even if you have a C-section!

Comfortable loungewear

When it comes to the best postpartum clothes, comfy and function are key. You will want to nap every chance you get so lounging in comfortable clothing will help you sleep better.

I sweat a lot after my second child and for days I woke up in my own puddle of sweat! The postpartum hormones are the culprits so wearing something that is breathable is a must.

Bonus – the button down shirt provides easy access for breastfeeding and pumping.

Postpartum care for pain and discomfort

Painkillers (Tylenol, Motrin, Advil, etc.)

You will feel pain after giving birth – whether you have a vaginal delivery or C-section.

There is no way around it.

If you have a C-section, there will be pain on the incision site. If you have tears or episiotomy from a vaginal birth, there will be pain “down there”. Even if you have no tears or incisions, you may feel uterine pain from your uterus contracting after birth.

For me, the most painful and unbearable pain was my breast engorgement. The pain was nothing compared to my tears down there. For days, I felt like there were a hundred needles stabbing my boobs. I can’t raise my arms, reach for things, and needed help wearing my own clothes!

I had to take Tylenol and Motrin on the clock (especially before bed) to help ease my breast engorgement pain. Ask your care provider how to switch between the two to achieve the maximum painkilling effect.

Stool softener

The first poop after birth will be traumatic. I was so scared to use the restroom because I was afraid pushing will cause my stiches to burst.

Whether you have vaginal or C-section delivery, you’ll want to avoid as much pushing as possible when pooping.

Stool softener will be your new best friend in the bathroom department.

When I was pregnant and put on hospital bed rest, I was prescribed Colace twice a day to prevent constipation. After birth, the nurses gave me the same medication to soften stools.

Colace is not a laxative, which will make you want to go, it only softens whatever you already have.

Start taking it the day you gave birth (even if you don’t feel like pooping). You will be thankful by the time you actually need to go.

Fiber supplement

Your first bowel movement may not happen for two to three days after giving birth. If you are on the constipated side like me, taking a fiber supplement will make your first bowel movement more comfortable.

The Benefiber Daily Fiber Supplement is 100% natural and tasteless. You can add it to any beverages including prune juice. Did I mention that prune juice helps with constipation? Be sure to ask your nurse for one while you’re still in the hospital.

Postpartum care for the pelvic floor and perineum

Pads (Maxi, Regular, and Pantie Liners)

You will have HEAVY bleeding for the first 2-3 days after giving birth. The hospital will provide you these maternity pads. Be sure to take extra home with you. I took 1 extra pack home and it was sufficient for me.

From days 4-10, your bleeding will get lighter so stock up on some pads for heavy/medium flow.
Postpartum underwear

For about a week after the birth of my second child, I experienced some incontinence where I felt leakage whenever I stood up or sneeze. It’s actually quit normal to have postpartum incontinence and I wish I knew this earlier.

I didn’t like the feeling of wetness on my bloody maxi pads (gross!) so I got some postpartum underwear.

These disposable underwears are very comfortable – you don’t feel like you have a 3″ thick pad between your legs- and I don’t feel ashamed wearing them. After my incontinence went away, I alternate between wearing disposable underwear and using pads on my panties for postpartum bleeding.

Hemorrhoidal pads

Following delivery, hemorrhoids are common for most moms. These pads provide instant relief from burning and itching. It contains witch hazel, an astringent that relieves inflammation and helps soothe the skin.

The cooling effects of these pads is a life saver, especially if you have pain from stiches and bruises down there.

The most effective way of using the hemorrhoids pads is to lay 2-3 of them on your maxi pads. The medicated pads are like a mask for your perineum. Every time you use the bathroom, change to a new maxi pad, and lay a few hemorrhoid pads on it.

You can also use these cooling pads to wipe down there and keep your pelvic floor clean.

Perineum spray

Your hospital may provide the Dermoplast spray. Be sure to take it home with you especially if you have a vaginal delivery. The medicated spray immediately numbs the pain and itch and provides a cooling effect.

Peri bottles

Your pelvic floor will feel sore and sensitive after birth, make wiping impossible. There will be lots of blood coming out and you want to keep it clean.

Hospitals provide peri bottles so be sure to take it home. You can also purchase extra on Amazon (they are super cheap) and have one for every bathroom.

Sitz bath

Doing sitz bath postpartum is so relaxing and provides some comfort when there is little to be found elsewhere.

Preparation is effortless as well. Put some hot water in the sitz bath seat, steep this organic sitz bath tea bag for approximately 5 minutes, and let cool.
Best postpartum care products for the breasts

Breast therapy pads

Your breasts will engorge before your mature milk comes in, typically on the third or fourth day after your baby is born. Breast engorgement is identified by swollen, hard, heavy, and/or tender breasts – and can make breastfeeding difficult. Clogged milk ducts and mastitis are common causes of breast engorgement.

My breast engorgement lasted 3 days and it was extremely painful for me (honestly, worse than my pain down there).

Besides taking painkillers, I’ve found lots of relief applying cold packs to my breasts.

I leave these breast therapy packs in the freezer and stick it onto my breasts whenever I needed relief.

When my milk started to come in, I used these packs as warm therapy as warmth can help with milk flow.

BONUS – It’s the only product of its kind designed to work with a breast pump to encourage let-down and reduce time spent pumping. Just heat up the packs, insert in the covers it comes with & easily snaps onto breast pump flanges!

Nursing bras

Have at least 5 nursing bras washed and ready to wear in your postpartum care kit. You will be spending lots of time breastfeeding so you want a bra that is easily accessible.

These nursing bras snap down easily and they are comfortable to sleep with.

For less than $7 a piece, these nursing bras are a steal!

Hands-free pumping bra kit

If there is one item I can’t live without as a new mom, it is this hands-free pumping bra kit.

I use this kit rather than a hands-free pumping bra for many reasons. The kit is way cheaper, more compact, more durable, easy to wash, and one size fits all.

Most importantly, you can massage your breasts while pumping. Massage while pumping will get more milk out in less time. Watch this video on how to massage your breasts to remove more milk while pumping.

Nipple cream

All the breastfeeding and pumping takes the beating out of your nipples.

Dry, cracked, and bleeding nipples are no fun.

Give your nipples some TLC by applying nipple cream before you breastfeed and/or pump.

This nipple cream is clinically tested and most recommended by Doctors and Lactation Consultants. It comes with 3 mini tubes which are extremely portable. I have one in my pumping station downstairs, another one upstairs, and one in the diaper bag. The price is also cheaper than buying a jar from another brand.

A little goes a long way too. A pack of 3 mini tubes lasted about a year for me.

Postpartum essentials to make your life easier as a new mom

Other than the postpartum recovery care items to help you heal faster, there are a few things you’ll want to consider to make your postpartum life easier.

Freezer meals

If you won’t have someone making or delivering meals to you, having your freezer stocked with prepared meals is a must!

Your newborn will be feeding every 1-3 hours. You will be exhausted from meeting your baby’s need and the sleepless nights, you will barely have time to cook for yourself.

Good nutrition is essential especially if you’re breastfeeding. So, start making some nutritious freezer meals before your baby arrives.

I recommend making at least 20 days’ worth of food. You can always do take-outs or have friends deliver foods to you in between.

Check out these 39 postpartum freezer meal ideas and these postpartum meals and snacks ideas.

Netflex, Kindle, Audible

Yes, you will be exhausted taking care of your newborn but believe it or not, most of the time is dedicated to breastfeeding and consoling a crying/fuzzy baby.

I spent most of my waking postpartum hours sitting on the glider with the baby in my arms. Watching shows on Netflix and listening to stories on Audible made my days go by faster.

If you love to read like me, I highly recommend Brain Rules for Baby. This is one of the best parenting books I’ve read that teaches you how to raise a smart and happy baby.

Easy snacks

Taking care of a newborn burns your energy. Have some protein-rich snacks readily accessible when hunger strikes.

These popular protein bars are organic and made only from clean ingredients. Best of all, it tastes just like your homemade chocolate brownies!

I also recommend keeping a jar of mixed nuts around to ensure that you’re taking in enough good fats.

A journal to keep track of baby’s feeding and soiled diapers

Keeping track of your baby’s feeding and diapering is important, especially when visiting the pediatrician or if your baby becomes ill.

I jot down how much and how often my baby feeds and the number of wet/soiled diapers in my journal.

There are also easy to use apps like this one to help track your baby’s daily habits.

As an NICU mama, you may feel overwhelmed with NICU mom guilt.

You may be unsure of yourself and the decisions you’re making.

But don’t worry – those feelings are totally normal!

You are not alone in your journey. As a twice NICU mom, I understand the struggle to find your footing and conquer any persistent feeling of NICU mom guilt that can creep up on us when our baby is on this difficult journey with us.

And as we know all too well, raising a premature baby comes with its own unique challenges.

In this blog post, I am excited to share 11 tips that have helped me work through my own feelings of guilt while navigating life in the NICU.

What is the average time parents spend with their baby in the NICU

Although statistics might show that moms visit their NICU babies 6.2 days per week (4.7 days for dads), it’s important to remember that everyone’s situation is different. If you live far away, have other kids at home, or just need some rest, then your availability will vary – and that’s okay!

Take into consideration your own individual needs and limitations when deciding what works best for you. Additionally, keep in mind the average number of days premature babies spend in the NICU, which is 13.2 days.

It can be a long road, so make sure to take care of yourself along the way.

Do NICU babies have attachment issues?

Research shows that infants who spend time in the NICU are 6.1 times more likely to have problems forming attachments during their early years compared to those who did not spend time in the NICU. This means that it is important to take steps to reduce the chances it will occur.

Both of my kids were swept away right after they were born. I was only able to hold Madi for 3 minutes until she was transferred to the NICU. As for W, I didn’t even see him for the first time until 2 days later.

From there on, staying close to them while they developed in the NICU became a priority for me; not only because I wanted them to know that they were loved, but also so that I could make peace with my NICU mom guilt.

Holding my infants in kangaroo care, talking and singing to them gave me solace and a connection that got us all through those days when being apart felt impossible.

NICU baby bonding tips

Creating a connection with your baby in the NICU can be an emotional roller coaster – from feeling helpless to burdened by guilt. However, there are plenty of ways to form those much-needed bonds despite any physical boundaries (the incubator, lines, and tubes) that may seem demanding.

Visit your baby every day

Even if your baby is in the incubator and you can’t touch or hold her, she knows you are there for her.

Always wash your hands before vising your baby. Never stroke a preemie’s skin since they are not fully developed yet. You want to touch your baby to make her feel calm, cared for, and loved.

Feed your baby

Feeding is an important component whether you breastfeed or use bottles.

The instinct to survive is a powerful force that runs through every living creature, but it manifests itself differently in us humans. For us, feeding is fundamental to the sense of security we get from the ones who take care of us in our early years — namely, our parents.

A mother’s bond with her newborn baby through bottle-feeding or breastfeeding brings about comfort and trust between them. The baby becomes familiar with their food and also the face of their parent; it creates a lasting connection of love and security.

Do the kangaroo care

Doing skin-to-skin with your baby benefits both mom and baby. It increased our milk supply, while stabilizes the baby’s heart and respiratory rates, and improves oxygen saturation rates. Pretty cool right?

Ask your NICU nurse for a comfortable reclining nursing chair. I didn’t find out that our NICU has it weeks after until one of the nurses asked me if I want to sit in one!

If your baby’s condition allows, do at least 30 minutes every skin-to-skin session. During our NICU stay, Baby W feeds every 3 hours. Since he always falls asleep on my bare chest, we do skin-to-skin about an hour before his feeding time so that he can feed after a good hour-long sleep.

Try to spend time bonding with your baby as much as possible. But being a NICU mom doesn’t have to be filled with stress, guilt, or pressure — there are plenty of things you can do every day that will help alleviate anxiety and provide relief from this overwhelming season of life. Continue reading for my best tips to overcome the NICU mom guilt.

11 Tips to conquer the NICU mom guilt

Know that your baby won’t remember the NICU time

Every day spent in the NICU feels like an eternity but when you look at it from your baby’s entire lifetime, it’s only a tiny fraction of their lifespan.

W had a whole bunch of IV lines going into his wrists and belly button. He was intubated and had sensors attached to his tiny head for stroke surveillance. And if that’s not enough torture for my 4-pounder, he wore a harness for his hip dysplasia that immobilized him for 12 weeks.

As a mother, it broke my heart to witness all the pain my precious NICU baby had to endure.

Despite spending the first months of his life in a hospital, W has grown into an incredibly brave five-year-old. If there’s a silver lining to his NICU stay, I’d say that he faces all doctor’s visits and immunization shots head-on with no fear!

Your baby is getting the best care possible

You can rest assured knowing that your bundle of joy is in the best hands. The team of dedicated professionals in the NICU has a wealth of experience and knowledge to make sure that your baby is receiving top-notch care. They will be with you every step of the way and make sure that your little one gets all the attention, treatment, and extra love they need to grow up healthy and strong.

You can rest easy knowing that your baby is getting the best care possible, allowing you the peace of mind to focus on other things such as increasing your milk supply.

You are not alone

If you are feeling guilty about your baby being in the NICU, know that you are not alone. Many other moms have gone through this exact same thing and they understand how you are feeling. There is no need to feel guilty or ashamed – you are doing everything you can to help your baby.

When W was in the NICU, he had a roommate, and I ended up talking to his mom. We swapped our birth stories as well as what we were all planning on doing after our babies are discharged.

No one is ever alone in the NICU—we all shared stories of solidarity and bonded over our joys, fears, and the hope that everything would eventually be just fine.

Seize the opportunity to get ready for your baby’s homecoming

While your baby is being cared for in the NICU, you can use this period of time to make sure everything is ready for when your little one comes home.

Instead of feeling guilty about it, seize the opportunity!

Once you’re finished decorating the nursery and stocking up on diapers, all those extra touches will ensure you’re fully prepared for the big day. Don’t forget to look for the best clothes for NICU babies and, if applicable, begin researching childcare options so you can go back to work with peace of mind.

It’s also beneficial to get your maternity paperwork done during the NICU stays.

Even though it may be overwhelming at times, preparing yourself before bringing baby home from the NICU helps ease any stress and makes welcoming your baby home smoother.

Prioritize taking care of yourself as well as baby in the NICU

I was two weeks into my daily visit to the NICU and feeling guilty for not being able to do more. But then, as I was pulling into the hospital’s parking lot, I suddenly felt dizzy and had to quickly park in a handicapped spot and rest until it passed.

That’s when it struck me: all the traveling, pumping, and worrying had taken their toll on my physical and mental well-being without me even noticing.

So, ever since that day, I’ve made a conscious effort to not let guilt consume me but instead find ways for postpartum self-care so that I can bring peace of mind knowing that both my physical and mental health are taken care of. It’s been difficult at times but listening closely to how my body is feeling has truly helped me shift my perspective so that empowering guilt doesn’t take over.

Your baby knows you love them

The fact that you are reading this article proves that you care and want the best for your little one. You’ve come seeking comforting advice and ways to cope with what you’re going through, which shows just how devoted a mom you are.

Even though you may not be physically with your baby all the time, they can sense your love and your touch, which is helping to heal and make them strong.

When you have time away from the hospital, take advantage of that—ensure you get enough rest and relaxation in order to recharge and heal yourself. But when you visit your baby give 100%, and focus on being present in that moment. Your baby loves and appreciates it, even if they don’t yet know how to tell it.

You are doing everything you can

When the feelings of NICU mom guilt arise, just take a second to remind yourself that you are doing everything humanly possible for your baby. You’re surviving the NICU, doing your best to increase your milk supply, and visiting them every day with loads of love and care.

You’re your baby’s biggest advocate and they know that even if words can’t express it yet! So don’t overwhelm yourself with unnecessary guilt, accept that you are doing the most you can to get your little one through this tough stage of life.

Know that it is not your fault

It’s easy to blame yourself for your baby being in the NICU, but you need to remember that it isn’t your fault.

When I was told that I had suffered from a placenta abruption I immediately felt like I should have known the risk. If I had gained more weight during my pregnancy the outcome would have been different. If I had checked into the hospital earlier, my baby wouldn’t suffer brain trauma at birth.

These thoughts are totally natural but unfortunately completely fruitless. There are situations where no one could have predicted the outcome or prevented it. So give yourself a break, take deep breaths, and know that sometimes these things just happen.

Have someone to talk to

Overcoming the NICU mom guilt can be an incredibly challenging journey. Having a great support system is essential and starts with talking to your partner – they’ll always listen.

It’s also beneficial to reach out to your ob-gyn and NICU nurses as they can provide so much insight you may be missing. If this isn’t enough, many hospitals offer visits from social workers, NICU support teams or a pastor to help express any feelings you are going through.

When I was at the Children’s hospital, I had several opportunities to talk through my emotions and it was such a weight off my shoulders (and heart!).

Connecting with people who understand and want what’s best for you is key on the long road of overcoming NICU mom guilt.

It’s ok to show your emotions

There are times when you may be feeling overwhelmed, sad, scared, or just downright frustrated about the situation that your baby is in. It can be so easy to bottle up these emotions, but letting out those tears can often be one of the best things that you can do for yourself.

I know from experience that it’s perfectly normal and healthy to cry in front of your NICU doctor or nurse if that’s what helps you cope. Even though at first it felt uncomfortable for me to let my true emotions show like this, I eventually learned that nobody was judging me for it – they only wanted me to have the best possible outcome for my child.

Showing your emotions in situations like these can make all the difference in the world when it comes to coping with NICU mom guilt!

This is just a temporary situation

It’s important to remember that this trying time will eventually end. Your baby is strong and resilient and will soon be back with you where they belong.

Reminding yourself of the end goal – a healthy baby at home – can help relax the weight and guilt you may be holding onto.

To make sure you’re able to deal with your thoughts, allow yourself some alone time every day to process what you are going through, It’s normal and it won’t last forever.

Last thing you need to know about NICU mom guilt

You are not alone in your journey as a NICU mom. And even though it’s hard, you’re doing an amazing job. Be gentle with yourself and give yourself some grace.
11 Remedies for Postpartum Hair Loss That Really Work

If you’re experiencing postpartum hair loss, you’re in good company.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, postpartum Partum hair loss affects somewhere between 40 to 50 percent of women; but like most changes during pregnancy, it is temporary.

While some shedding is normal (the average woman loses approximately 50 to 100 strands a day), excess hair loss is usually the result of one of several factors, including hormonal changes, stress, and medical condition.

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I’ll receive a commission if you purchase through my link, at no extra cost to you. Please read full disclosure here.

My hair shed like crazy after both of my pregnancies. I would clog the drain every time I wash my hair in the shower. I tried everything to prevent my postpartum hair loss by switching shampoos, taking extra vitamins, and even talking to my doctor.

Luckily, I was able to regrow most of my hair. Nearly after two years postpartum, I gained back my shiny, bouncy, full head of hair!

Before I dive into the remedies for postpartum hair loss, it’s important to understand why postpartum hair loss happens.

Why does Postpartum hair loss happen

Our hair normally grows in cycles (growing phase, the resting phase, shedding phase: repeat). But during pregnancy, most of the hair stays in the growth phase due to big changes in our pregnant body.

But after our hormones begin to change (again) after the baby arrives, estrogen levels fall, causing our beautiful, thick head of pregnancy hair to begin the shedding phase. Because so much of our hair is shed all at once, the volume of hair loss seems far more substantial.

When does postpartum hair loss begin

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, hair loss peaks at 4 months after delivery. The time of onset and length of postpartum hair loss differs from one woman to another. I didn’t start getting falling hair until 6 months postpartum and noticed a significant decrease in my hair loss when my baby turned 18 months.

Common Postpartum hair loss myths

In the postpartum period, some women experience rapid hair loss. This is normal and doesn’t necessarily mean you have a medical condition like thyroid disease or anemia. There are myths surrounding this phenomenon that need to be dispelled in order to help new moms feel more empowered at this time in their lives.

One myth is that if you’re losing your hair it means you are producing less milk for your baby – not true!

Another myth is that it’s because of low iron levels- false!

In fact, hormones play a huge role in postpartum hair loss and can lead to other side effects such as acne breakouts, mood swings, fatigue, etc.

The good news? Hair grows back eventually so don’t worry too much about it.

How to stop postpartum hair loss and regrow hair fast

Don’t Panic!

Feeling like you’re getting bald and you need to see the doctor right away? Trust me, I know how you feel.

My hair loss was so bad that I feel a cat crawling down my back whenever I rinse my hair in the shower. Nonetheless, it was my fallen hair.

Just know that postpartum hair loss is a natural process and IT WILL STOP.

Also, stop hunting for bold spots. Negative thoughts will only make it worse.

Keep your mind out of your hair loss instead, and occupy yourself with the tips below on regrowing your hair fast.

Take the right postpartum hair loss vitamins

There are some things you can do to minimize the level of hair loss, including trying vitamins meant to encourage growth. This won’t slow your hair loss, but the idea would be to assist in the healthy regrowth of new hairs.

I’m not a huge proponent of taking postpartum hair loss vitamins because most vitamins targeted for hair loss contain high doses of certain vitamins and minerals that can be harmful in some cases (especially if you’re breastfeeding).

However, I’m a proponent of taking a good women’s multivitamin and healthy eating. I switched back to my SmartyPants Multivitamin for Women after I’m done with my prenatal vitamins. These are the best multivitamins that support healthy hair because it includes elements like omega-3s, iron, magnesium, zinc, vitamin E, and biotin that can help with the hair recovery process.

Get plenty of sleep each night

It’s important for new moms to get rest in order for their bodies and minds to heal from childbirth. That time of relaxation is essential in order for mama-bear mode (or any type of mode) to come back again.

Remember, your hair needs to be in a nurturing environment (aka your healthy, restful body) in order to grow.

Now go ahead, relax, drink tea, and enjoy those moments with your newborn – because they don’t last long!

Eat a balanced diet full of hair growth-promoting foods

Eating a balanced diet with the right nutrients can help promote hair growth, especially if you’re suffering from postpartum hair loss. In addition to a nutritious diet, aim for foods with high levels of omega-3s, Vitamin B, and protein.

Foods high in omegas-3s include:

Salmon, tuna, mackerel, and other fatty fish

Flaxseed oil, Flaxseeds, chia seeds, canola oil

Walnuts

Soybeans, tofu, and cruciferous

Vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts)

Foods high in B vitamins include:

Bananas

Potatoes (both white and sweet)

Spinach

Red meat

Poultry

Fish

Diary

Foods high in protein include:

Lean meats like fish and chicken,

Eggs

Soy products like tofu and soymilk

Wash hair less often

Wash less often and use products that protect the hair from heat damage like oils or serums. You can opt for dry shampoo in between hair wash – this will give it some volume and make you feel better about how it looks.

The best shampoo for postpartum hair loss I’ve used so far is PURA D’OR Gold Label Anti-Thinning Biotin Shampoo. It’s not only formulated with biotin (a superstar ingredient for hair growth) it also contains a proprietary blend of 17 organic ingredients. It even contains he shou wu, a well-known herb in Chinese Traditional Medicine for hair growth and thickening!

Buy On Amazon

Comb your hair the right way

Did you know that combing your hair the wrong way will make cause break ends and brittle hair?

The correct way of combing your hair is to start combing at the ends and work your way through the hair shaft. This is a gentler technique. Start combing with short strokes at the bottom, detangling in sections, until the comb passes easily down the whole length of your hair.

Massage scalp to help with circulation and new hair growth

Massaging your scalp is a really good way to stimulate the hair follicles and help prevent hair loss.

When you massage your scalp, you increase blood flow and help to release any built-up toxins in your scalp, which will help with hair growth.

Here’s how to massage your scalp the right way.

Start with wet or dry hair that is down and accessory free.

Use your fingertips. Do not let your nails scratch your scalp! If you have long nails, use your knuckles instead.

Begin on the sides of your head, and run all four fingers upwards towards the top of your scalp with a firm circular motion.

Continue the process all the way around your head.

I massage my scalp every time I shampoo and also once during the day. I have a really dry scalp so I rub 1~2 drops of jojoba oil between my fingertips when I massage my scalp. Jojoba oil works wonders in moisturizing the hair and stimulating the scalp.

I also use this scalp massager before bed. There is some tingling sensation when I run through my scalp and I instantly feel more relaxed.

Buy On Amazon

Sunscreen your hair

The UV rays from the sun can cause damage to our scalp. So just like our skin, the scalp needs sun protection as well.

The easiest way to “sunscreen” your hair is to wear a hat.

Avoid washing hair with hard water

Anyone who has ever dealt with hard water knows that it can be a real pain. Not only does it leave behind unsightly mineral deposits, but it can also make hair feel dry and brittle. In fact, hard water is one of the leading causes of hair loss.

The high levels of minerals in hard water can damage hair follicles, making them more likely to fall out. This is especially troubling for women who are already struggling with postpartum hair loss.

Fortunately, there is a simple solution: installing a shower filter.

Shower filters help to remove the minerals from water, making it softer and gentler on hair. As a result, using a shower filter can help to reduce hair loss and promote healthy hair growth.

This high-output shower filter came highly recommended by my hair stylist. It has a multi-stage filter that efficiently reduces chlorine and other chemicals. I can tell a huge difference in how my hair and skin feel after installing this shower filter.

Avoid physical stress on your hair

Consider cutting down on the amount of time you spend blow-drying or straightening your hair every day – the act of pulling, tugging, and heating causes physical stress to your hair.

Not to mention perms and dyes. Regardless if you are doing it yourself or paying a visit to the salon, any unnecessary stress to the hair will make it more brittle and prone to fall-out.

Cut hair bluntly

One of the best things you can do is to get regular trims at a salon. This will help to prevent split ends from getting too long and breaking off.

In addition, blunt hair creates the illusion of thicker hair, so it is a good idea to avoid layered styles. If you are considering bangs, now is the perfect time to go for it! Not only will they help to disguise hair loss, but they can also be a fun way to change up your look.
