Why I decided to give HiPP baby formula a try

My preemie son was 4 pounds when he was born. He wasn’t breathing when he came out and stayed in the NICU for almost two months. He had trouble gaining weight (he failed to be on the growth chart even at 6 months old). And even worse, had developmental delays.

I was determined to give my son the best nutrition out there.

Although I had achieved an abundance of milk supply, we still opted to supplement with formula.

I had known HiPP organic milk from my mommy friends and relatives. All of them raved about how amazing this brand is.

To be honest, I was pretty skeptical.

Formula is formula, right? I mean, the only difference is that some are made from organic ingredients and some aren’t, right?

How important is a high-quality baby formula to you?

The first question you need to ask yourself before considering HiPP is how serious you are about the quality of baby formula. While some parents are content with conventional (not organic) baby formula, some are particular about the cleanliness, the ingredients, or whether it’s organic or not.

If you are ok with conventional baby formula, I would recommend you opt for something easily accessible in the U.S. such as Similac or Enfamil. These are popular American baby formulas and are usually given in the hospital.

Yes, both of my babies were fed Similac and Enfamil during their stay in the NICU.

These popular American formulas are easily accessible – Target, Walmart, Costco, Amazon, convenience stores, etc. You never have to worry about short supply because you can always pick them up at a store near you.

What sets HiPP baby formula apart from other baby formulas?

HiPP is a baby food brand headquartered in Germany. For over 100 years, HiPP has been known for its ecological agriculture and sustainable values. For me personally, the better taste is the obvious reason. HiPP formula tastes just like my breastmilk, but creamier. It doesn’t taste “synthetic” like some other baby formulas.

I also like that there are different stages to choose from. For example, Stage Pre is for 0 – 3 months, Stage 1 is for 3-6 months, and so forth. Unlike American baby formula that serves 0-1 year. We’ll go into depth about the different stages later in the post.

Strict regulation in European baby formula

While baby formula is regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration, the guidance is very basic. As long as the formula contains a minimum amount, and does not exceed the maximum amount, of nutrients the product is considered safe (1).

In contrast, the European Union is very strict on what are the ingredients in their baby formula.

The EU regulation on baby formula include:

• a proper bioavailable mix of nutrients 
• sources of nutrient
• specific amino acidic composition to mimic the maternal milk and ensure proper protein intake
• no detectable levels of pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, mycotoxins, heavy metals, etc.

HiPP organic baby formula is strictly controlled and verified by independent supervisory institutions. The German company controls all its products on several physical and chemical parameters that are more stringent than is required by legislation. 

HiPP uses only milk from farms that operate strictly according to the guidelines of EU organic farming. 

The cows are kept humanely and grazed on natural meadows, which are farmed without chemical fertilizers and without synthetic chemical pesticides. The natural feeding of livestock with grass, hay, or grain guarantees the absolute best organic quality, resulting in nutrient-rich milk that is not overly processed.

Cleaner ingredients that mimic breastmilk

Due to the tight regulation set forth by the EU, many ingredients found in American baby formula are banned in Europe. The ingredients that still find their way into American formula include:

• Sucrose or corn syrup – These sugars are so-called empty carbs and are completely devoid of nutritional value.
• Carrageenan – Used as a thickener in baby formula, these seaweed extracts have been linked to gastrointestinal diseases (2).
• Synthetic Preservatives and Nutrients – Lutein, Lycopene, Beta carotene, and L-methionine are some of the synthetic nutrients found in American formula.

Hipp baby formula does not have any of these ingredients that the scientific community recognizes as having any negative effect on the health of newborns and toddlers.

Hipp formulates their products with vitamins and minerals and the only added nutrients that are present in these products are those that have been deemed safe by the EU. 

The HiPP baby formula difference

Sweeteners

HiPP sweetens its formula with lactose. Lactose is more expensive than sucrose or corn syrup, but it is one that most closely mimics human breast milk. This is why it moves quickly through the digestive system and is very well-tolerated by infants.

Protein

The main protein in HiPP formulas is whey powder. Although there are proteins in skim milk, whey protein is truly a powerhouse when it comes to nutritional benefits. Since whey contains all nine essential amino acids, it is considered a complete protein. Also, it’s important to point out that human breast milk is 60 percent whey, which means that formulas that contain whey better simulate breast milk than those that don’t.

Starches

HiPP formulas contain organic starch, a complex carbohydrate necessary for growth. It takes time for your baby’s body to break down complex carbs, and starches provide vital energy throughout the digestion process. Not only do starches help your baby feel fuller for longer, but they also lend a thickness and smooth consistency to formula.

Eco-friendly & smart packaging

Disadvantages of HiPP organic formula

American pediatrician acceptance

HiPP, amongst other European baby formulas, is not registered with the FDA. Some American pediatricians discourage parents from using formulas that aren’t regulated by the FDA as there is no system in place to notify consumers in the United States if any of these formulas are recalled.

Also, the instructions are in German so parents run the risk of making incorrect water to formula ratio. The HiPP UK version, however, is in English. I’ll explain the different versions of HiPP baby formula later in this article.

Palm oil

Palm oil is a plant-based vegetable oil that is added to the formula to meet the energy needs of the growing baby. However, research has shown that calcium and fat absorption is lower in babies given formula with palm oil.  The good thing is that palm oil is not the only source of plant-based fat in the formula; HiPP also contains Rapeseed oil and Sunflower oil.

If you are concerned about palm oil in your baby’s formula, then HiPP is not for you.

Sourcing

Since HiPP is not registered with the FDA, it does not have official distribution channels in the United States. Unless you or someone else can bring these directly over from Europe, you can only purchase them online via a third-party vendor.

This runs the risk that the vendor may not store the powdered formula properly, raising the possibility of bacterial contamination, product deterioration, loss in nutrient density, or worse, selling counterfeit products (3).

The online vendor should be carefully vetted to ensure that you are purchasing the “real” and highest-quality HiPP baby formula.

Does HiPP baby formula have probiotics?

Parents are curious about the HiPP labeling of “Combiotic” formula milk.  This term was actually created by HiPP laboratories and is a phrase that defines the synergy between the prebiotics and the probiotics of the formula.

Certain HiPP formulas contain the L. Fermentum probiotic (Lactobacillus) that is found in mother’s milk.

In order to survive, probiotic organisms feed off of prebiotics, a special form of dietary fiber.  The prebiotics used by HiPP is galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) that are obtained from lactose and are a natural component of breast milk oligosaccharides. 

The presence of prebiotics serves to cultivate and keep alive the probiotic strands, allowing them to proliferate and establish themselves in the gut.  This creates a synergistic value to the prebiotic and probiotic relationship which HiPP has termed Combiotic.

The different stages of HiPP formula

Most American baby formulas are marketed from 0 to 12 months. Instead of having this one size fits all nutrition, HiPP baby formula has different stages. The nutritional needs of a newborn are different than the needs of a 6 months old who is starting solids. This tailored approach ensures that your baby gets the adequate nutrition needed for optimal growth at every stage.

The most common difference between stages is an increase in iron.

There are also more filling ingredients such as starch to help wean off of formula and introduce more solid foods.

Stages marked as “PRE” should not be confused with Premie or Preterm Birth. These formulas generally do not contain starch compared to later stages. Stage PRE is basically Stage 1 formula designed for sensitive tummies (suitable for newborns).

The different versions of HiPP formula

As you can see from the above comparison chart, HiPP has many versions. This is because HiPP is manufactured for many countries in Europe, in other languages, and with other ingredients.

Each country’s health administration regulates the specific ingredients contained in the formula.

I personally use the German version because it is the original version developed by the German company. However, a lot of American parents are getting the UK version because the labels are in English (no translations needed!) and no starch is added for a creamier consistency.

Does HiPP have hypoallergenic formulas?

HiPP has a hypoallergenic (HA) combiotic formula tailored to the particular nutritional requirements of infants at risk of allergies.

It contains hydrolyzed protein (milk protein is broken down into smaller fragments) which can be easily digested by the baby’s tummy.

This hypoallergenic formula comes in 3 stages. Stage Pre, Stage 1, and Stage 2.

I have been giving the hypoallergenic version to Baby Madi. At 3 months old, she developed severe eczema all over her body. She was prescribed steroids and antibiotics but the moment we stopped the medication, her eczema would come back.

I decided to switch over to the hypoallergenic version and within 1 month, I’ve noticed a difference in Baby Madi’s skin. Her colic has also subsided after switching over to this version.

May 2023 update: Toddler Madi no longer needs formula but her eczema flare-ups sent us a visit to her allergist. The doctor emphasized the significance of probiotics in eczema treatment. She recommends we give Madi foods that are rich in probiotics (such as yogurt and kefir). This was an ah-ha moment for me because the HiPP HA formula contains prebiotics & probiotics. No wonder we noticed a difference in her skin when we switched over to this formula!

Why is HiPP not sold in the United States?

Essentials to help sleep train your baby

Sleep sack for a safe sleep training

Newborns are born with a startle reflex. If the reflex is strong, your newborn may startle herself awake at night and during naps. That’s why swaddling a baby up like a jelly bean works wonders to help comfort the fuzzy one. Most babies don’t outgrow the startle reflex until 4 or 5 months of age. And it is also around the 5-months mark that a baby is able to roll over.

Swaddling should be stopped when your baby is able to roll over on to her tummy while she sleeps as it increases the risk of SIDS!

If you are ready to sleep train your baby, she is probably old enough to break out of swaddling (or sleep with her arms in). Sleep sacks replace loose blankets in the crib for a safer environment that can provide the needed feeling of security of being swaddled. Their hands need to be free to reposition themselves when they roll over so they can push up off the mattress.

When choosing the best sleep sacks for sleep training, I opt for the ones that offer the arms-in and arms-out options. Better bang for the bucks we’re talking about here!

Another important feature to look out for is that the bottom of the sleep sacks are roomy enough for the legs to bend up and out at the hips. This position allows for the natural development of the hip joints and prevents hip dysplasia. Avoid choosing sleep sacks that confine the legs.

Lovey to give security

The lovey can be a security blanket, a small stuffed animal, or a small piece of blanket. Having a lovey, or a comfort object a baby goes to sleep with, will help your baby ease to sleep and help him fall back to sleep when he wakes.

Provide a lovey to your baby only for sleeping. Avoid having her carry the lovey all day long. This will help your baby associate the lovey with sleep when she finds the lovey in her crib.

Baby Chunbao had no idea what to do with the stuffed doggie we gave him. Regardless, we place the doggie next to him when he naps and sleeps each day. Within a few days, he started holding the doggie to sleep, and now, he wouldn’t sleep without it!

Even when he wakes in the middle of the night, he wants his doggie instead of me!

Nice warm bath

A nice warm bath as a part of the bedtime routine will calm your baby down from a day’s play. Our bath time is no more than 5 minutes long, but I sing songs and teach baby Chunbao about body parts while bathing him.

Having a humidifier when your baby sleeps will make the air feel warmer & improve breathing comfort, nasal congestion & dry skin. After I put baby Chunbao down on his crib, I turn on the humidifier for his entire nap or sleep. There were a couple of times I forgot to turn on the humidifier and he had awaken in the middle of the night. Ever since then, I always have the humidifier turned on whenever he sleeps.

Should baby begin to stir naturally, the calming drone of the white-noise machine provides comfort, encouraging your still-sleepy baby to sink back into a deep sleep.

After Baby Chunbao grew out depending on white noise to fall asleep, I stared using it for myself on sleepless nights ? No matter which training method you use, sleep training your baby involved a certain degree of separation from your baby. Take the anxieity out of now knowing how your baby is doing by investing in a video monitor.

Practice safe sleep training by watching your baby through the monitor during naps and sleeps. Even though we were successful in sleep training our baby in 5 days, we continue to watch him for about 2 weeks. You don’t need to watch your baby for hours or be attached to the monitor like a hawk (even though it’s hard to resist).

We love the Nest Cam because the video is HD, has Wifi, night vision, 2-Way talk, and works with Google Assistant. When we were sleep training baby Chunbao, we put him in his crib awake, closed his door, and walked away. I leave my phone on so I can see him through the Next app while we watch TV in the living room.

Black-out curtain to block off unnecessary lights

When sleep training, you want to offer the optimal environment for sleep as much as possible. Too much light when your baby is trying to sleep can be very bothersome. These beautiful embroidery curtains are the ones we have for the nursery. It not only does the job but I have received so many praises on them.

Make sure you open the curtains during the day, except during nap times, especially if your baby plays in the nursery during the day. Exposing your baby to strong cues about day versus night will help program your baby’s “internal clock”. When they sense darkness, they inherently know it’s about time to sleep!

Set the right temperature

It is recommended that babies sleep in a temperature between 68° and 72°F (20° to 22.2°C). Maintaining a safe room temperature for your baby is important because it reduces the risk of overheating, which has been linked to SIDS.

It might be hard to gauge whether your baby is actually comfortable so the best way to gauge their comfort level is to consider how you feel in the room.

If you haven’t already, consider switching to a smart thermostat such as the Nest Learning thermostat. Massage your baby to promote better sleeping

While baby Chunbao was in the NICU, the nurses stressed how important it is to massage my preemie. Research has shown that infants who have their skin stroked regularly cry and fuss less than those who don’t. Rubbing your baby the right way will lower the stress hormone cortisol and increase the release of the sleep hormone, melatonin.

Since I learned how to massage baby Chunbao from the Physical therapists, I have incorporated in our daily bedtime routine.

Make sure you use some baby-safe massage oil. All you need is a quarter size for the entire body. Our favorite is the Mustela Baby Oil because of its high quality, combats baby Chunbao’s eczema, and smells amazing!

Here are 4 easy ways to massage your baby for full-body relaxation. Starting from the forehead, extend your thumbs to the nose and scalp. Gently squeeze your baby’s four limbs as you slowing move away from the body. Turn your baby over and use your palms to rub from top to bottom. Finally, stroke the bottom of the feet with your thumbs.

Diapers especially made for bedtime

Not all diapers are created the same. Nighttime diapers are typically more absorbent than the daytime varieties. Putting your baby to sleep with overnight diapers can avoid unnecessary diaper changes in the middle of the night when he pees out. Generally, nighttime diapers are more expensive but I don’t have any doubts about investing in these to get a longer sleep at night.

We have tried many brands and we love Pampers Baby Dry Diapers. These are the ones used in our NICU and we continue to use it until baby Chunbao is potty trained. I also noticed that the Pampers diapers are longer than other brands giving more protection in the back. Sometimes we switch to Honest Overnights diapers because of its natural awesomeness. Their diapers are free from chlorine and chemical bleaches. It hugs the thighs very well making it super leak-free. This one is for you if you are looking for natural diapers.

Musical mobile to sooth baby’s sensory

We used to have a crib mobile with a musical box and cute rotating animals. However, the music that comes with our crib mobile doesn’t sound very good so I sought to replace it. I replaced it with this musical mobile and it is such a game-changer! Not only does it come with 60 different songs, but the tunes are very soothing. The sounds remind me of an old-fashioned ballerina music box.

The musical mobile can be attached to any crib mobile and it can play songs and spins separately.

I usually turn it on when I massage baby Chunbao during our bedtime routine and turns it off after we kiss goodnight. Since baby Chunbao loves the music that comes with it, I take the music box with us whenever we travel. Even at 3 years-old he still enjoys listening to the music box before bedtime.

Glider to encourage bonding

Where is a better spot to read books to your baby before bedtime than to snuggle in a comfy glider? Reading is part of our daily bedtime routine, just before I put baby Chunbao in his crib. The only place that allows us to read books together comfortably is on our glider where I used to nurse him on.

When choosing a glider, opt for the ones that are easy to clean come with an ottoman for some extra leg rests. We love the Windsor Glider and Ottoman because it comes with storage pockets and removable cushions for easy clean-up.

A safe and firm crib mattress

Having a comfortable crib mattress can help your baby fall asleep and stay asleep. If your baby is still sleeping in the pack n’ play, it’s time to upgrade to the crib!

We made the transition from having baby Chunbao sleep in the pack n’ play in our room to sleeping in his own crib in the nursery on Day 1 of sleep training.

Investing in a safe and durable crib mattress is crucial. I highly recommend the 2-stage crib mattress from Sealy. Place your infant on the firmer side and when she becomes a toddler, flip the mattress over for the softer side. Another better bang for the bucks!

By definition, a cold is a viral upper respiratory infection, so no virus, no cold (1).

These nasty viruses are culprits to the tickly throat, a runny or stuffy nose, and sneezing. If there’s a fever, it is not high. A child with a cold usually feels quite well and has a good appetite and normal energy levels. (2)

The flu, however, is caused by the Influenza Virus. Although symptoms can be mild kids with the flu feel worse than if they have a cold. 

Many people confuse cough with allergy as the symptoms are very similar. Before treating your baby with a cold, it is best to talk to your healthcare provider to determine what your child has.

Treatment plan for cold symptoms

Before we dive into cold remedies, we need to understand what causes your toddler’s cold symptoms so that we can tackle them one by one.

Your child is having cold symptoms because his immune system is working hard to fight off the virus.

So, we need to boost immunity internally and provide the perfect environment for their little bodies to do the work.

Cough and sore throat happen because of the virus attacking the upper respiratory system making the throat dry, itch, and inflamed.

Therefore, we need to treat cough and sore throat by giving something soothing.

Congestion and running nose can be attributed to the overproduction of mucus. The increased mucus can make your baby hard to breathe and blobs of snot run out of their nose.

We need to thin out the mucus in order to make it easier to drain out.

Ways to boost the immune system to fight off the cold virus

Homemade chicken soup

There’s some good old healing power in chicken soup.

Besides being soothing and easy to digest, its ingredients can help to relieve cold symptoms. The broth provides electrolytes and micronutrients to strengthen the immune system.

Although there are many variations, my basic chicken soup includes chicken leg, onion, scallion, ginger, carrots, and celery. Just add everything to a pot of boiling water and simmer for 2 hours.

I always use chicken bone rather than just chicken meat for soup. Bones are rich in vitamins and nutrients. It is also more flavorful when simmered for hours.

Onions, scallions, and celery have anti-inflammatory properties, while ginger has “warming” properties that speed up blood circulation. Carrots are also a nutritious vegetable and add sweetness to the soup.

You can toss all the cooked vegetables but save the chicken meat (should be falling off the bones!) for a different dish.

When time is short, I just put everything in my instant pot, and cook on high pressure for 40 minutes.

I usually cook a big batch of chicken broth and add in other ingredients to make it a meal.

Here is Baby W’s lunch when he was sick. I added frozen mixed vegetables, lentil pasta, chicken leg meat, and some salt to the broth. He ate it all!

Onion soup

Onion is considered to be the most powerful natural antibiotic, which can fight off both viral and bacterial infections, and ease the symptoms of a cold.

Now, let me show you my secret on how I make onion “essence”.

• Put a small sauce dish in the middle of a pot
• place 1 chopped onion around the dish sauce
• Cook it in the rice cooker. I cook in this multi-functional rice cooker. Or you can steam the onions on the stove.
• Use tongs to take out the cooked onions.
• What you have left in the sauce dish is essentially onion “essence”!

Foods to avoid when your child is sick with cold

Avoid all cold foods and drinks such as ice cream, cold juice, and salad. Cold foods not only make sore throat worse but also make our immune system work harder.

If your toddler is having a lot of mucus, congestion, running nose, or wet cough, avoid foods that thicken the mucus. These include oatmeal, wheat, and dairy.

Needless to say, avoid spicy food as it will exacerbate cough.

Multivitamin

I give daily multivitamin gummies to my toddler and I make sure I don’t forget to give him when he’s sick. A little boost of an all-rounded multivitamin will help support the body while it’s busy fighting the virus.

My son loves the Lil Critters Gummy Vites. It tastes just like real gummy bears but without too much sugar and artificial flavors.

Manuka honey lemon tea

We’ve all heard of drinking honey tea for cold. But do you know that not all honey is created equal?

Manuka honey has the most medicinal properties among all honey types. A small teaspoon can boost the immune system and prevent your toddler from getting sick.

I dissolve a teaspoon of manuka honey in hot water and add fresh lemon juice to the tea for some added vitamin C. I serve the tea lukewarm to my son and he always loves drinking it.

Only give honey to babies over 1 year old due to the risk of infant botulism.

Best tips to treat cold symptoms

Steamy warm bath to thin out mucus

The #1 tip we got from all the pediatricians is steam baths are best for running nose and congestion.

When my baby is sick with lots of runny noses, I prepare a tub of water warmer than usual and have her sit in it. The steam really makes her nose run so I have to keep wiping her.

My secret weapon is the Frida Baby Vapor Bath Bombs. The essential oils in the baby-safe bath bomb are very soothing. It instantly calms a fuzzy baby making this a sick day essential.

Vaporub for a fuzzy baby

If your baby is fuzzy because she’s not feeling well, try rubbing Vicks BabyRub on her chest and feet. The ointment is specially formulated for babies and contain natural scents to calm, soothe, and relax your baby.

When my baby was coughing up a storm she couldn’t sleep at night. I rub some on her chest and it really helped her fall asleep better.

Suction mucus out in baby

If your baby doesn’t know how to blow her nose yet, you need to help her drain out her snot. If the gooey stuff is left in the nose for too long, it will cause infection.

For babies, you can use the suction bulb or the NoseFrida Snot Sucker. I personally like the bulb suction better because the part that goes in the nostrils is smaller and you can section with just 1 hand.

Cooked pear is best for sore throat and cough

Steamed pear is a popular Chinese remedy for cough relief. It is believed that the combination of rock sugar and pear has certain medicinal benefits. According to traditional Chinese medicine, this dessert can reduce excessive phlegm to effectively ease coughs caused by the common cold.

The best part is that since this is a sweet dessert, the kids love them. Here’s a simple recipe.

• Wash the pear thoroughly and do not shave off the skin.
• Cut the pear top off and save for later. Scoop or cut out the core.
• Add 1/2 teaspoon of rock sugar to the center and put the top back.
• Steam for 20-30 minutes.

You can serve the cooked pear as is or purée to make it into a “pear sauce” for babies.

Instill a good environment so your toddler will get better quicker

Home is the best place to be

Rest is super important for recovery.

Avoid going outside, especially when it’s cold. In fact, studies have suggested that being cold might weaken the immune system, making us more vulnerable to those viruses (3).

Also, avoid taking your toddler to crowded indoor areas as that can increase exposure to other viruses in the air.

When my kids are sick, I make sure they get at least 12 hours of sleep per day. I would let my 4-year-old watch some TV so that he can lie on the couch and just rest.

Think twice about turning on the humidifier

Research also suggests that high indoor humidity may promote the transmission of flu. With high humidity, flu viruses expelled in a sneeze, for example, tend to attach to water molecules and may drop out of the air before they can trigger a new infection.

I used to always keep the humidifier on in my kids’ room when they sleep and even blast it up when they are sick. Ever since I learned that humidifiers can make the flu virus linger longer, I stopped turning them on and my kids actually got better quicker!

Ditch the heater

Running the heat to keep the house warm also dries it out — and can dry out the sinuses, too. When we don’t have good nasal mucus flow, it’s harder for the immune system to work against the virus.

Instead of turning up the heater, keep your toddler warm with a heavy, breathable blanket, or a cozy sleeping bag.

There are many natural remedies you can use to help your toddler or baby feel better. One great thing to do is to make sure they stay hydrated with lots of rest.

Learning how to sleep alone is great for children’s development as they learn how to be more independent and not overly rely on their parents.

Getting your child to successfully transition into sleeping alone can be a challenging undertaking but it is possible.

Here are the proven tips designed specifically for parents who struggle to get their kids settled into a regular independent sleeping routine.

1. Establish a bedtime routine and stick with it

One of the best ways to help your child sleep alone is to establish a bedtime routine. A bedtime routine should include activities such as taking a bath, brushing teeth and reading a book. Doing these activities every night will signal to your child that it is time to go to sleep.

With both of my babes, we established our bedtime routine from day 1. Even when they were just a couple of months old, we did the same routine every day, without fail. Our bedtime routine consists of brushing our teeth, taking a bath, reading a book, and saying nighty-night. After we finished reading books (one for big brother and another for little sister), my kids would put the books on their bookshelf and hop onto their beds.

2. Make sure the bedroom is dark and quiet

Another way to help your child sleep alone is to make sure the bedroom is dark and quiet. This means closing the blinds or curtains and turning off any electronics that may emit light or noise. Creating a calm environment will help your child relax and fall asleep more easily.

3. Give your child the power to choose

Kids are afraid to fall asleep because they don’t have a sense of trust in the unpredictability of the environment after they fall asleep. To help your child establish trust in sleep, give them the power to choose.

Let your child choose which teddy bear to cuddle with to bed, let him choose which books to read before bed, and which pajamas to wear. If you have a bedtime routine, let him choose which activities to do… you get the idea. 

4. Give your child a sense of identity in their sleep surrounding

Let your child have a say in what bed sheets he wants to sleep on or even all the nursery decorations. Your child will get a sense of identity in his own room and this could help him build trust in sleep. Before bed, you can tell your child to “go find your friend Micky (referring to the Micky Mouse printed bedsheets) or “Princesses Elsa is calling you for bed (for an Elsa sleep pillow)”. This technique can help distract your child from the unpredictability he feels after lights off.

Be courageous and playful, and let your child know that going to bed is not scary at all.

5. Teach your child the importance of sleep

As your child grows and starts to make a connection between ideas, it’s important to teach your child the importance of sleep. It’s important to give your child their sense of mission in sleep. 

Let your child know that sleeping alone = you’re grown up and you’re ready to do more things!

Tell your child sleeping together is for little babies. Sleeping alone will make her fall asleep faster, and falling asleep faster will make her grow taller and healthier.

If they don’t have a sense of mission in sleep and they are being forced to sleep alone, they will not nurture the ability to fall asleep independently.

6. Keep toys out of the bed

If your child sleeps with toys that he normally plays with during the day, you may want to keep them out of the bed during the night. This will help your child associate the bed with sleep, not playtime.

Sometimes, my kids would play with toys in their bed but I always ask them to clean up before our bedtime routine starts. They know that the only thing allowed on their bed is their stuffed animals that they cuddle to sleep with.

7. Give your child a security object

If your child is having trouble sleeping alone, you might want to give them a security object such as a stuffed animal or blanket. This can help your child feel more comfortable and safe when they are in their room by themselves.

8. Avoid screentime right before bed

Avoiding screen time right before bed is essential. Blue light emitted from screens can impact sleepiness and make training tougher. You want your child to feel sleepy, as this makes it a lot easier for them to know when sleep time is coming so they can get in the habit of falling asleep by themselves.

9. Don’t stay in the room until they fall asleep

Once you have checked on your child and said goodnight, it’s important to leave the room so they can fall asleep on their own. If you stay in the room, they may start to think that they need you in order to fall asleep, which can make it harder for them to sleep alone in the future.

10. Assure your child that you are not going away

After you put your child in her own room, let her know that mommy and daddy are just outside.  You can say something like “You go in and sleep. You know where to find us if you need us”.

On the first night, most kids will refuse to sleep alone or that they come to find you shortly after you leave the room. If this happens, you can take another approach and say “ok, go in first and tuck yourself in your bed. We will go find you after a while”. Then, progressively increase the length you go in. Progressively letting your child fall asleep alone is the best way to establish trust in sleep.

11. Set limits on how often you check on your child

It’s important to let your child know that you are nearby, but you don’t want to check on them too often. Checking on them too often can actually make it harder for them to sleep alone. Instead, set limits on how often you will check on them and stick to those limits.

12. Reward good behavior

If your child spends a night sleeping in their own bed without coming to find you, be sure to praise them for their good behavior! This will help encourage them to keep up the good work. You can give them a small prize or treat as a reward for sleeping in their own bed all night long.

13. Don’t punish bad behavior

On the other hand, punishment is not an effective way to get your child to sleep alone. If they come into your room during the night, simply guide them back to their own bed without yelling or scolding them. Yelling or punishing them will only make it harder for them to sleep alone and could cause them to be even more afraid of sleeping in their own bed
